“I had the honour to be called to envision the future of “Autostrade”. I designed 10 artworks based on one only line, one road that connects the past, the present and leads toward the future.”
The Italia in movimento. Autostrade e futuro exhibition at MAXXI celebrates a century of Italian motorways, exploring how they have shaped the landscape, society, and collective imagination.
The “Journey” section reflects on what is offered to the traveler’s gaze – an aesthetic comfort – along the motorway’s routes and services, including small architectural structures, rest areas, and refreshment stops. From Giovanni Michelucci to Jean Nouvel, architecture is also a key element in the exhibition, with buildings like wineries, bridges, train stations, corporate headquarters, and production campuses designed by renowned architects now dotting the motorway landscape. These structures are not merely dynamic backdrops, but an integral part of people’s lives, visible to those on the motorways and those near them.
Photographer Iwan Baan’s aerial images, taken from helicopter surveys, capture the essence of the motorway landscape. The exhibition also explores the future, where technology and environmental awareness will shape tomorrow’s motorways, with green proposals from Renzo Piano’s studio (RPBW) and visionary works by Emiliano Ponzi.
